Listvinafélagið í Hveragerði

In 2004 Hveragerði municipality published the book “Hveragerðisskáldin 1933-1974″ (Poets in Hveragerði 1933-1974) by the author Pjetur Hafstein Lárusson. A year later at a meeting in Hveragerði Pjetur introduced his idea for founding a society which purpose would be to establish some kind of museum related to all the artists that had lived in the community.

Listvinafélag Hveragerðis (Friends of the Arts in Hveragerði) was founded in 2007 and began to collect the published works of the towns poets which were then stored at the Public Library in Hveragerði.

Hveragerði – the Oasis of the Poets

In 2011 the Society of Senior Citizens in Hveragerði collaborated with the artist Guðrún Arndís Tryggvadóttir to design and direct an exhibition about the poets. The exhibition ignited a new life in Friends of the Arts and in the beginning of 2012 the society was renewed with the goal of creating a permanent exhibition, linking culture among artists and artlovers, using exhibitions and other events collaborating with museums and municipalities in Iceland.

The Artists’ Colony in Hveragerði – the first years

This exhibition is also designed and directed by the artist Guðrún Arndís Tryggvadóttir. It is the first exhibition by Friends of the Arts. The society has ambition and interest for the future and plans to gradually enlarge the exhibition, including poets, authors, painters, sculptors and composers.

The Board wishes to thank all the sponsors, who made the exhibition a reality.
